MAGIC MUSHROOMS: HOW FUNGI HELP RESTORE FORESTS

  • Wednesday April 1st, 2020

Our success story, LIFE MycoRestore, included in the last FERN report (March 2020) for its contribution to forest restoration through the management of mycological resources.

FERN is an organization dedicated to protecting forests and the people who depend on them. FERN works, together with other organizations and governments, for environmental justice in the most threatened forest regions.

FERN’s latest report «EU Forests of Hope» includes a special mention to our LIFE MycoRestore project for its innovative use of fungi to restore forests and combat climate change. Project partners explain the main objectives and the important role this initiative plays for the benefit of forests and people. Fungi, both below ground (mycelia) and above ground (mushrooms), are key to supporting forest ecosystems while producing high-value edible products (truffles). This project, therefore, helps to restore forests while stimulating the local economy, empowering the population and creating new job opportunities.

FERN recognizes the essential role of such initiatives which apply best practices to improve forests’ health and resilience to climate change while protecting the livelihoods of local people.
