LIFE Vida for Citrus proposes the development of sustainable control strategies for citrus under the threat of climate change and for the prevention of the entry of HLB into the EU. The HLB disease, or Huanglongbing, is caused by a bacterium of the genus Candidatus Liberibacter spp, and is considered the most serious and devastating citrus disease worldwide. There is no known cure and current control measures have a negative environmental impact.

The objectives of the project are:

  • Test new plant material, rootstocks, tolerant and/or resistant to high temperatures and HLB.
  • Implement adaptive, mitigation and prevention strategies to increase plant defenses and prevent the entry of pests and diseases.
  • Contribute to early diagnosis of HLB
  • Promote international cooperation to prevent the entry and potential spread of HLB in the US.
